Gun control

Violence in Brazil takes some people to consider arming themselves as a form of self-protection, but evidence shows that guns are great tools for attacking, not defending. In most cases, those who fight back during robberies end up being killed, and keeping weapons at home is four times more likely to result in an accident, murder or suicide than to actually provide any protection.

THE DISARMAMENT OF SOCIETY IS A HISTORICAL CAUSE FOR VIVA RIO. IN 2001 WE PARTICIPATED IN THE DESTRUCTION OF OVER 600,000 GUNS, PISTOLS, RIFLES, SHOTGUNS AND CARBINES DURING A GREAT DEMONSTRATION AT FLAMENGO PARK. WE SUPPORT THE DISARMAMENT STATUTE THAT LIMITS THE POSSESSION OF FIREARMS BY COMMON CITIZENS, AND OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE HELPED REMOVE THOUSANDS OF WEAPONS FROM THE STREETS. WE STILL WORK WITH OFFICIALS TO AVOID SETBACKS IN THE LAW. WE HAVE ALSO HOSTED EVENTS IN VIOLENT COMMUNITIES TO EXCHANGE TOY FIREARMS FOR OTHER GIFTS, AND OUR HEADQUARTERS STILL RECEIVES WEAPONS TO BE DESTROYED.
