EMERGENCY CARE CENTERS Emergency care centers (UPAs) fall hierarchically between preventive healthcare centers and hospitals. Viva Rio manages six UPAs in cooperation with the Rio de Janeiro municipal government and two with the state government. They are located in some of the poorest and most violent parts of the city, in Rocinha, Alemão, Maré, Ilha do Governador, Penha, Engenho Novo, Irajá and the Gericinó Penitentiary Complex (Bangu), and are open 24/7. It is not by chance that the UPAs we run are located in troubled areas of the city. We choose to work in sensitive regions and our relationship with the surrounding communities is essential to ensuring these units can function on a full-time schedule. + 2,9 MILLION patients assisted + 2,5 MILLION exams carried out PEDIATRIC CARE CENTER In 2016, when the State Government announced funding cuts to UPAs, the solution for the Ilha do Governador unit was to specialize as a pediatric unit. Viva Rio embraced this idea and transformed this UPA into a renowned institution. The center’s costs fell by 41% while the number of patients assisted increased by more than 50%.
