Favela of Rocinha is home to the program De Olho no Lixo: turning waste into art, culture and education, which encourages a shift from the trash culture to a reusable waste culture. In other words, turning an environmental issue into income, artistic production and education. The project is a partnership of Viva Rio with the State of Rio's Government and Supermarkets Association (ASSERJ).
WE REMOVED 640 TONS OF TRASH FROM ROCINHA IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2017.
Residents sort part of the waste, which is then collected by environmental agents and sent to Cooperativa Rocinha Recicla, a recycling cooperative based in the favela, whose employees explain people how to sort and dispose trash at home. The engagement of the community is paramount to the success of the project.
Music and percussion lessons and production of instruments using material collected from the trash.
A workshop on how to make accessories and clothing from fabric scraps, worn-out jeans, banners and other discarded itens.
